Newark Parks Foundation was founded on November 12, 2015 by four initial Board members. The wheel was set in motion when one Newark mom (Angela) was not able to honor a neighborhood kid's request for a ride to the Fremont Skatepark, something she had done a few times prior. That twelve year old (Chris) made a simple remark that tugged on her heart: "I wish we [Newark] had a skatepark."
Another (Steve) yearned to provide a pump track/bike park for kids so that they could have fun, learn bike handling skills, and dodge traffic dangers. Fast forward a month later, and Angela read Nextdoor.com posts from community members (including Linda/Sergio) expressing their desire for a Newark dog park.
The conclusion was that the Newark community has unmet outdoor recreational needs, all of which have been highlighted in Newark's General Plan for many years. Why then a long history of failed community attempts at getting these needs met?
Somebody needed to organize the community. Somebody needed to identify funding sources. Somebody needed to give voice to urban parks and open spaces, especially for powerless youth. If not us, then who?
